<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Event: Feminist Futurism panel - I love stepping away from the solitude of my writing practice to connect with the community, and I'm excited that on Saturday, September 27th, I'll be at MarinMOCA for a panel discussion titled "Feminist Futurism vs. Project 2025."</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ll be joining an amazing group of authors: Faith Adiele, Angela Dalton, and Charlie Jane Anders. Moderated by Isis Asare of Sistah SciFi, this literary salon is where we’ll discuss how we use our writing to reimagine futures & resist oppression.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I'm Reading: The Rack - Synopsis: “It’s 1980 and you have three crisp dollar bills in your pocket. You run to the drugstore, or maybe the supermarket, because you know THE RACK will be there, waiting... that spinning wire rack, tempting you with the latest and best horror paperbacks and their lurid covers.”</image:title>
<image:caption>My take: The table of contents alone is worth an award—Stephen King, Johnny Compton, Cynthia Pelayo, Errick Nunnally, Gwendolyn Kiste, and the list goes on. Every story in this anthology is a winner. Some of my favorites are “Fuzzy Slippers,” by Jeff Strand, “Ursa Diruo,” by Kristin Dearborn, and “Other Things Have Happened,” by Ronald Malfi. Pick up a copy now and thank me later.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Event: StokerCon Panel - “Authentic Representation in Horror” - A number of horror writers have recently weighed in on whether it is okay for authors to pen works outside of their lived experience. This is an important topic, and I will be on a StokerCon 2025 panel discussing this subject. Moderated by Logan Johnson, “Authentic Representation in Horror” will feature Aaron Dries, Rob Costello, Gaby Triana, Rami Ungar, Rae Knowles, and yours truly. If you’ll be in Stamford, Connecticut check us out on Saturday, June 14th at 2pm ET in Grove Ballroom 2.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - “The See-through Lady” published - I’m delighted that my short story, “The See-through Lady,” is included in Portals, Gateways, and Doors, a new anthology from Farthest Star Publishing. My tale includes a doorway that hides a sinister secret, a passageway that is sometimes there and sometimes not.</image:title>
<image:caption>“Portals, Gateways, and Doors is a collection of stories where boundaries blur and the familiar gives way to the unknown. From distant worlds and hidden dimensions to profound shifts in consciousness, these tales explore the passageways that lead beyond. Whether through a doorway to another planet or a portal into the depths of the mind, each story delves into the transformative power of crossing over—where what lies ahead is as uncertain as it is inevitable.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I'm Reading: The World Wasn't Ready for You by Justin C. Key - Synopsis: “In The World Wasn’t Ready for You, Key expands and subverts the horror genre to expertly explore issues of race, class, prejudice, love, exclusion, loneliness, and what it means to be a person in the world, while revealing the horrifying nature inherent in all of us.”</image:title>
<image:caption>My take: Key is the truth. This collection of horror and sci fi tales is deeply imagined. "Spider King" is a frightening visceral read, and even though I’m afraid of spiders and delightfully repulsed on every page, the piece is so mesmerizing I can't stop reading. Every story in this collection is a winner.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I’m Watching: When Evil Lurks (2023) - Synopsis: “ The residents of a small rural town discover that a demon is about to be born among them. They desperately try to escape before the evil is born, but it may be too late.”</image:title>
<image:caption>My take: A brilliant horror masterpiece. I needed every content warning. I felt every emotion—terror, dread, shock, anger—and I went through all the stages of grief. I care about Pedro and Jimi and am right on the journey with them as they try to save their loved ones from an evil they could neither predict nor comprehend. This stomach-turning, brutal film brings to mind The VVitch and Children of the Corn, and is a must-watch for horror lovers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Maxwell Ian Gold - Gold: When I am writing cosmic horror, particularly with Tiny Oblivions I felt like I was I pulling at the anxieties of an already anxious world and the wide, diverse vulnerabilities of a species, attempting to grapple with its own reasons for being. Tiny Oblivions was also a little bit of coming home in terms of the content focusing on weird fiction and cosmic horror solely, whereas Bleeding Rainbows and Other Broken Spectrums had a much different tone.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Jamal Hodge - Hodge: Silence, service, and pain. In the silences between waking up and dreaming, I pull inspiration from whatever is manifested; I ask myself how it can be appropriately applied to fulfill its function. Where will it alleviate pain in others? And will I make it of service to someone outside of myself. For instance, I wrote The Dark Between the Twilight as an emotional trojan horse. At first, it seems like it’s about me, but it’s really about being so vulnerable and honest on a journey of healing and redemption that it inspires the reader to do the same in their own life.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Mark Leslie - Leslie: I think that Michael Andrews resonates with readers because he didn’t ask for what happened to him. He’s a normal guy who struggles with confidence issues and just “making his way in the world today” (to borrow from the lyrics to the Cheers theme song). Michael has to try to live his life while dealing with the side-effects of turning into a grey wolf during the phase of the full moon.</image:title>

Marie Wood stopped by ahead of the launch of her latest work, The Horror Aesthetic: Essays from the Dark Corners of the Genre. I met Wood two years ago at StokerCon on the Black Women in Horror panel, and she is as kind and giving as she is brilliant. That year, Wood was nominated for a Stoker Award twice in the same category; I joked that she was the rare author who was competing against herself. Wood is the Horror Writers Association’s current Vice President, and the organization is blessed to have her in that role.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with L. Marie Wood - Wood: The short answer is, believe it or not, I don’t know. I have been part of the genre for a long time, and I’ve seen some things. I’ve made some mistakes. I’ve had some successes. I guess I feel compelled to pull those experiences together and share them so that people can be better equipped than I was to move forward on their journeys. I spent a lot of time uncovering things that people could sidestep if they had the benefit of knowledge. So, I share. I live my life in this way—I believe we should help each other along the way because we are all in this together.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl - Florence and Hafdahl: There are so many, but for Meg, sleeping in the same bedroom that Lizzie Borden slept in was such a surreal experience! Since childhood she’d read about Lizzie, so that strange sense of staring at the same ceiling as she drifted off to sleep will stick with her for life!</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Alison McBain - I was intrigued when I first learned of author Alison McBain’s current project. She has set out to write a novel a week over the course of a year to prove humans make better novelists than AI, and can not only match bot output, but can do it better.</image:title>
<image:caption>I feel guilty for asking her to break from her work, but I am delighted she has found the time between penning 52 novels to stop by and answer these four questions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Alison McBain - McBain: It’s been a fun but bumpy ride at times. While I’ve written 40,000-plus words in a week before while working for various ghostwriting clients, I’ve always had some sort of break in between. I might take a week off after completing a project or switch to doing editing instead of writing.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Craig DiLouie - A StokerCon highlight from this year was getting to chat with author Craig DiLouie, who is as gracious as he is brilliant. I was lucky to have him join my Four Questions series when his book Episode Thirteen was released, and I’m thrilled that he’s back to talk about his latest—How to Make a Horror Movie and Survive.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Craig DiLouie - As a writer, I enjoyed diving into the era of analog filmmaking. I loved the tactile feel of the film stock, the bulky cameras, the hot lights, the chaotic sets. Perfect fodder for a story about filmmaking. I found these slasher films to be the ideal backdrop for a story about why we love horror—an emotion that in the real world we do our utmost to avoid—and I wanted the novel to replicate the experience of catching one of them in the theater. The tension, the gasps, the laughter, the overall sense of fun.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Alethea Lyons - Author Alethea Lyons has a new book out, The Hiding, and she was kind enough to stop by to discuss horror, a spooky experience in her own life, and the scariest book she’s ever read.</image:title>
<image:caption>Tamika Thompson: What is horror? Alethea Lyons: That's a difficult one! I guess I'd classify it as fiction where one of the primary aims is to scare people, whether that's through disgust and gore, or through creepiness and tension.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Alethea Lyons - Lyons: Supernatural creatures use a lot of very similar technology to us. They're hiding in plain sight, so they use phones and computers, basically any tech a human would. But if one has magic, why not use it to improve the tech a bit, and vice versa? It's a bit like making an instrument electric. The violin exists as an acoustic and lots of people use it that way, but we also know how to use electricity to manipulate sound. That would look like magic if you took it back five hundred years.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Lee Rozelle - Rozelle: Five years ago, I saw a photograph of a fish that seemed to be standing on its head underwater, floating wrong, alive but kind of sideways and upside down. Traces of human antidepressants in the water, I found, can cause all kinds of effects on fish. That fish wormed around in my imagination for quite a while. I began to imagine fish with human appendages, flaccid human sex organs, and human teeth. Slowly the fish creatures in my mind grew more and more human.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I’m Reading: The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker - Synopsis: “Frank Cotton's insatiable appetite for the dark pleasures of pain led him to the puzzle of Lemarchand's box, and from there, to a death only a sick-minded soul could invent. But his brother's love-crazed wife, Julia, has discovered a way to bring Frank back—though the price will be bloody and terrible . . . and there will certainly be hell to pay.”</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I’m Reading: Never Whistle at Night - Synopsis: “Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home.”</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Jennifer Anne Gordon - The award-winning author joining Tamika Talks Terror today has a tattoo of one of the scariest lines in all of horror literature.</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m grateful that Jennifer Anne Gordon stopped by to answer four questions amid the launch of her latest collection, The Japanese Box: Tales of Grief and Horror, and to tell us about that tattoo. Tamika Thompson: What is horror? Jennifer Anne Gordon: This is such a subjective question. Horror is different for everyone.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Jennifer Anne Gordon - Gordon: I hope readers come away with not only a greater understanding of “quiet horror” but also an appreciation for horror stories that are not only deeply personal but also experimental in theme and style. Also selfishly I hope they take away a greater understanding of who I am as a writer as well as who I am on a very personal level. The story “The Japanese Box” actually started as a personal essay and only became “horror” later in the writing process. It very much is speculative horror memoir.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Kenya Moss-Dyme - Moss-Dyme: The inspiration for Sick XOXO, or “sick love” came from a conversation I had with my mom, whose been gone now about 25 years. She said to me, what is scarier than being so much in love with (a man) that you allow them access to ALL of you? Your money, your safety, your thoughts, your body; you let down all of your guards and they can destroy you and leave you in a pile of ashes that blow away with the wind. What’s scarier than that?</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I’m Reading: I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid - Synopsis: “I’m thinking of ending things. Once this thought arrives, it stays. It sticks. It lingers. It’s always there. Always. Jake once said, “Sometimes a thought is closer to truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you can’t fake a thought.” And here’s what I’m thinking: I don’t want to be here.”</image:title>
<image:caption>My take: An unreliable narrator who remains unnamed, a background chorus discussing a crime, and the conversations between Jake and his girlfriend work together to create a thrilling, smart novel, which ponders, among other things, the idea that it is never possible to truly know a significant other.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I’m Reading: Out There Screaming, edited by Jordan Peele - Synopsis: “A cop begins seeing huge, blinking eyes where the headlights of cars should be that tell him who to pull over. Two freedom riders take a bus ride that leaves them stranded on a lonely road in Alabama where several unsettling somethings await them. A young girl dives into the depths of the Earth in search of the demon that killed her parents. <image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Stephanie Ellis - Ellis: The Woodcutter is an old legend in Little Hatchet. He is a monster, a demon, immortal but needing a new body at times as his old one wears away. When he senses that time is at hand, he takes an apprentice to teach him his trade, before taking his body completely. The Church fought back against the Woodcutter, using prayers at the boundaries of the woods to ensure he remained inside, and then played upon the people’s fear to keep them in line.</image:title>

Not only is she brilliant, but she is also kind-hearted, funny, and generous with her knowledge and expertise. <image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Mo Moshaty - Moshaty: I think really what warms me about the topic of Love the Sinner, is that we are all capable of committing something heinous when we can personally justify it. We've seen true crime documentaries where they were the quiet man, the life of the party woman, the sweetest person, yet they're committing these unspeakable acts of either violence, bigotry, theft what have you, and it's all because they've been motivated by something that they can justify.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Zachary Rosenberg - Rosenberg: The post-Civil War period is a huge turning point in American history: the death of the confederacy and slavery, the exploration of the west increasing. There's the sense of a changing nation. But one caught between the old ways and modernization. One still subjected to tyranny, discrimination, and brutality. Personally, I feel that's a setting ripe for more exploration!</image:title>

Calliope is a strong, brilliant, dark, and calculating character, and the film’s visual language is pulled from a dread-inducing nightmare. <image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Jonathan Louis Duckworth - I had the pleasure of meeting author Jonathan Louis Duckworth at StokerCon 2023 in Pittsburgh. I’m delighted that he took the time to stop by Tamika Talks Terror ahead of the summer release of his debut speculative story collection from JournalStone Publishing. His answers to my four questions are thought-provoking, and I might never look at stars the same again.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Jonathan Louis Duckworth - Duckworth: I often struggle to remember the inspiration for individual stories months or even years after first writing them. I think that’s a good thing, though. In poetry, there’s the concept of the poem transcending its poetic subject, and similarly, I think when a story succeeds it transcends and outgrows the germ from which it was inspired. That said, a lot of these scenarios are born from two places: just looking at what the world’s becoming, or my overactive imagination.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Wrath James White - If you’ve been paying attention to horror literature at all, then author Wrath James White needs no introduction.</image:title>
<image:caption>Ahead of the CLASH Books Summer 2023 release of his collection, The Ecstasy of Agony, White was kind enough to stop by and share his thoughts on, among other topics, the differences between the Splatterpunk and Extreme Horror sub-genres. His insights are clear-eyed and powerful, and we are lucky for his visit to Tamika Talks Terror.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Wrath James White - White: The pioneers of Splatterpunk were making a statement, rebelling against what was then the status quo. Their work had depth and meaning while also pushing the boundaries of what was permissible at the time in terms of sex and gore. They were going beyond the type of horror that was on the racks at the grocery store.</image:title>
<image:caption>The subject matter was as transgressive as the graphic depictions. It wasn't the standard suburban or rural horror tales, the dark woods, spooky old house, small town horror.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I’m Reading: Mr. Cables by Ronald Malfi - Synopsis: “For bestselling horror novelist Wilson Paventeau, the scariest novel of his career is one he didn't write. It bears his name on the dust jacket and contains his bio near the end, but this enigmatic tome is not part of his oeuvre. And the most frightening thing about it may not be the tale between the covers, but the reason for its mysterious appearance in Paventeau's life.”</image:title>
<image:caption>My take: A quick, eerie read. "Ghost written" takes on new meaning in this 82-page novella, which I inhaled in one sitting.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I’m Reading: Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century by Kim Fu - Synopsis: “In the twelve unforgettable tales of Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century, the strange is made familiar and the familiar strange, such that a girl growing wings on her legs feels like an ordinary rite of passage, while a bug-infested house becomes an impossible, Kafkaesque nightmare…These visions of modern life wrestle with themes of death and technological consequence, guilt and sexuality, and unmask the contradictions that exist within all of us.”</image:title>

Ashe takes you into a dark and bloody world where nothing is sacred and no one is safe. A landscape of urban decay and human degradation, this collection finds the psychic pressure points of us all, and giddily squeezes. Try to run, try to hide, but there is no escape: we are here to hurt each other.”</image:title>

<image:caption>My take: Satire that seems wonderfully absurd and even familiar until the horror element is dropped on the victims. Suspenseful. At times, funny. Incredibly frightening.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Rich Davis - Davis: Dracula is the archetypal vampire. Vampires represent primordial fears.</image:title>
<image:caption>The tormented spirits of those we couldn't save come back to torment us. Losses, regrets, memories that drain us dry. There's something universally human about that. We're all scared of it. I think those concepts just strike a chord deep inside us all. I think that is what allows Dracula as a concept to be re-imagined and re-interpreted in so many different ways without reducing its impact.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Elana Gomel - Gomel: Fairy tales were not originally for kids. Only in the 19th century did the Grimm Brothers publish their famous collection aimed at German children to educate them in their national heritage.</image:title>
<image:caption>In adapting these tales for a younger audience, they edited out a lot. The folk tales they collected were much darker, more sexually explicit, and more violent than the Disneyfied versions we are familiar with today. All the evil stepmothers, for example, were biological mothers in the originals.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - What I’m Reading: Hell Hath No Sorrow like a Woman Haunted by R.J. Joseph - Synopsis: “The Black women in these tales are women we all know. The mothers, wives, business owners, creatives, and more, that we see in everyday life. They perform the impossible and hold all ends together. Sometimes, they’re an open book, their stories written in the beloved lines of their faces and the varied bodies they wear with pride or weariness. Other times, their secrets squirm beneath the surface, aching for release and discovery while beckoning others to lean in. They whisper the horror of their predicaments, closer to home than you realize.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Philip Fracassi - Fracassi: It’s important to note that many of the things Tyson struggles with are very real thoughts and feelings that many writers—including myself—deal with on a daily basis. The questions that plague our minds when it comes to “success,” however that is defined for an individual. For some, success is financial, for some it’s more artistic, for some it might just mean knowing that X amount of people are reading, and enjoying, your work.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - Four Questions with Craig DiLouie - DiLouie: In surveys, roughly half of Americans say they’ve had a paranormal experience. Many claim they’ve been contacted by a deceased loved one, which offers them comfort. So, I think many don’t need proof. They just like to see others sharing their experiences, as it’s something they already believe in or can maybe even directly relate to.</image:title>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - My favorite horror films: 2022 - Smile (2022)</image:title>
<image:caption>Yes, this film feels derivative, but it still knocked me sideways. It has everything I love in a horror film. Cinematography keeps me off-kilter. A sinister, supernatural evil that feels too powerful to fight. Disturbing kills. Jump scares. Deeply felt character backstory that is germane to the plot. And it is all quite scary. I had to peek through my fingers during some scenes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tamika Talks Terror - My Writing Year in Review - I was delighted that one of the oldest science fiction magazines in the world picked up this story, they published it in an anniversary edition, and their readers connected with it. One person got in touch with me on social media to say that once they started reading it they couldn’t stop. Another reached out to say I should turn the piece into a novel. I will certainly consider that.</image:title>

<image:caption>The Between by Tananarive Due I love a book in which details and characters you've seen in the early pages get turned on their heads, making you question literally EVERYTHING you've already read. If "mind blown" were a novel, it would be The Between.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Extreme horror. Makes me want to take three showers, go to confession, and do a week-long cleanse. But it is not gross-out for gross-out’s sake. The characters are round; their pain rendered brutally on the page.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Claustrophobic. Frightening. I love my family but can't imagine being trapped in a bathroom with them.
