Only in the 19th century did the Grimm Brothers publish their famous collection aimed at German children to educate them in their national heritage. In adapting these tales for a younger audience, they edited out a lot. The folk tales they collected were much darker, more sexually explicit, and more violent than the Disneyfied versions we are familiar with today.
